Mom, Sun, Homeland

By Noam Shmuel and Yoni Zicholts
Based on a book by Itzhak Kronzon

Beer Sheva Theatre

2024

Itzhak Kronzon, a well-known Israeli cardiologist living in New York, is coming to visit Israel after years abroad. The surprising trip to his homeland brings back memories from his childhood in Haifa in the early 1950’s. He recalls the funny and unforgettable residents of 'Gaula' street, of his best friends, of his unrequited first love, and for the first time in his life, he re-examines his complex relationship with his parents and his country.
Itzhak confronts feelings he has suppressed for years and misses historic days that will never return.
What brings him back to Haifa? And what will happen when he returns back home?
“Mother, Sun, Homeland” is told from a teenage boy perspective, a boy whose whole world is the Haifa playground that surrounds him. The life in this mixed Haifa neighborhood portrays an intimate story full of ridiculousness and pain.
The play is based on a collection of stories published by Itzhak Kronzon in the "Davar" and "Davar HaShavu" newspapers and in the "Seven Days" supplement of Yedioth Ahronoth in the seventies and eighties.
